Harvesting Summer with the Kids

Harvesting Summer with the Kids

In reality, I tried to grow my own garden to allow the kids to taste the difference between a supermarket tomato and a garden-fresh tomato. We live in the middle of the city, and the garden seemed to be the perfect snack for the racoons and squirrels of our neighbourhood. Not quite the success I thought it would be. I needed to make sure the kids recognize the origin and hard work behind organic agriculture. It’s the best way for them to appreciate food and understand the seasons.

Last Sunday, in the very heart of the harvesting season I took the whole family on a road trip to my cousin Andrea’s farm where the kids got to pick their own vegetables. At the end of the day, we made over one hundred zucchini muffins. The perfect lunchbox snack for the kids once school starts and great souvenir from their day at the farm.
